Dr. Randy Machemehl currently serves as the Nasser I. Al-Rashid Centennial Professor in Transportation Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Since 1999 he has been Director of the Center for Transportation Research which is a multi-disciplinary research organization with an annual research budget of more than $15 million and involves faculty researchers from five different UT Austin colleges or schools. He is the author or co-author of over 300 papers, articles, and technical reports, and he is a registered professional engineer and a registered professional land surveyor.
His research interests span a wide range of topics but are concentrated on transportation system operations. Much of his recent work has dealt with the optimization of large-scale transportation systems including urban traffic signal networks and bus transit route networks. He has developed a variety of general and special-purpose computer simulators of ground transportation systems. Additionally, he has recently conducted a series of human factors studies in which he has examined vehicle driver responses to traffic control systems using instrumented vehicles and experimental driver monitoring systems. The human factors investigations have examined driver responses to freeway guide signing, arterial street traffic control, work zone traffic control, and rural road delineation and signing.
He serves as a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, and other professional organizations through many committees and a tour of duty as President of the Texas Section of ITE (TexITE). He currently serves as the Transportation Research Board (TRB) liaison for the University of Texas. He has received a number of professional awards including the 2006 S. S. Steinberg Award from the America Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and the 2007 Wilbur Smith Award from ASCE. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) since 2002 and was elected President of CUTC in June 2008.
