1373200 - Evaluation of Pavement ME prediction of rutting performance for Open-Graded Friction Course Asphalt Mixtures

Open-graded friction course (OGFC) mixtures are widely known for rapid water drainage, enhanced surface texture, improved driver safety, and a reduction in splash and spray. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of Pavement ME average total rut depth predictions with that of OGFC field-based average total rut depth measurements. The structural data, such as, mixture volumetric inputs - air voids, effective binder content, and aggregate gradation, gathered from a previously conducted study for six different OGFC sections of I-75 south of Atlanta, Georgia served as the pavement structure input for the Pavement ME software. The traffic data was collected from the weigh-in-motion (WIM) stations closest to the field sections, while the climatic data was collected from the weather station of an LTPP section along the I-75 south of Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, a local sensitivity analysis was conducted on different laboratory mixtures that included mineral fiber and cellulose fiber blended with PG 76-22 asphalt binder for the same sections of the I-75 south of Atlanta, Georgia with equal traffic levels and in the same climate zone as previously mentioned. Overall, field verification presented in this study will enable users of Pavement ME Design software to forecast the rutting performance of OGFC mixtures.
