Dr. Michael Murphy is a Senior Research Engineer and Deputy Director of the UT - Center for Transportation Research. He has over 14 years of experience working on a variety of research projects and Interagency Contracts with CTR. Prior to CTR, he worked 25 years for the Texas Department of Transportation starting in the Wichita Falls TxDOT District where he supervised the Central Design Office. He transferred to Austin in 1989 and worked in the Maintenance, Design and Construction Divisions; retiring as the Director of the CST-Pavements and Materials Systems Branch. During his tenure as Director of the Pavements and Materials Systems Branch, he was a member of the American Trucking Association – Maintenance and Technology – Tire impact on pavement damage task force. He made presentations to ATA-M&T members on pavement engineering and trucking industry topics. He also was a member for eight years of the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Data Analysis Expert Task Group and led the development of the Strategic and Tactical plans for FHWA and LTPP research projects for the LTPP program. Dr. Murphy was the TxDOT Pavements Technical Advisory Panel Chair for eight years and led a team of 40 TxDOT subject matter experts and university researchers in developing the Pavements Research Plan and presenting suggested research projects to the Pavements Research Management Committee (RMC). He later served 3 years on the Pavements RMC and assisted in developing the proposed annual research program for pavements.
