1374432 - Transforming NYC’s Urban Freight Landscape

Freight transportation is essential to the livability of cities, but often runs the risk of being an afterthought in transportation planning. However, in recent years, cities have been forced to grapple with solving for the last mile deliveries issues and the accelerated growth in e-commerce, further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. This growth has real life implications for a City’s transportation network, broader public realm, and climate goals. To solve for these challenges, many cities have taken a comprehensive data-driven approach to solve these challenges. In 2021, New York City Department of Transportation released a comprehensive freight management plan and broader sustainable freight vision (Delivering New York and Delivering Green) to usher in a transformative restructuring of New York City’s (NYC) last-mile delivery ecosystem allowing for safer, more efficient, and sustainable freight movement. This presentation will spotlight the bold actions and commitments undertaken to transform how goods are moved, to create a more livable city while supporting economic development. Participants will learn how these issues connect to broader transportation planning, highlighting the intersection of stakeholders, ranging from communities, industry, businesses, government, as well as those in the transportation and development professional practice whose design work focuses on urban freight and the public right of way.
