Boris Claros is a research scientist in the Traffic Operations and Safety Laboratory (TOPS) at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He obtained his masters and doctorate in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri – Columbia. Boris has extensive experience conducting calibrations of Highway Safety Manual models, developing crash prediction models, and performing safety evaluations (estimating crash modification factors). His research focuses on modeling and evaluating operations and safety of alternative geometric designs (roundabout, DDI, J-turn), safety management, winter maintenance, traffic control operations (critical gap, flashing yellow arrow), and bicycle naturalistic studies. He is active in the Transportation Research Board and serves in the Performance Effects of Geometric Design (AKD10) Committee. Currently, Dr. Claros is working on NCHRP 03-125 project to develop recommendations for left turn operations at signalized intersections with solid yellow and red arrow clearance intervals followed by permissive flashing yellow arrow.
