Dr. Laurence R. Rilett is the Ginn Distinguished Professor and Director of the Auburn University (AU) Transportation Research Institute. Prior to his arrival at AU in 2021 he was a Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and Director of the Mid America Transportation Center (MATC).
Rilett’s research is in the field of transportation system analysis area; his specific research focus includes multi-modal transportation system modeling with a focus on safety, reliability, resiliency, and equity. Rilett has been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than 45 research projects with total funding in excess of $50 million. Rilett has more than 250 publications, including over 100 peer-reviewed articles, over 100 conference proceedings papers, and many other published reports, editorials, and reviews. In 2021 the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) awarded Rilett the Frank M. Masters Transportation Engineering Award for “contributions to innovative research on transportation systems and collaborative leadership to develop a diverse workforce in transportation engineering.” He is currently the Managing Editor of the ASCE Journal of Transportation-Part A and the Past President of the Council of University Transportation Centers.
