1370821 - Advances in Comprehensive Roadway Evaluation for Pavement and Asset Management Applications

State transportation agencies regularly collect roadway inventory and condition data needed to meet federal and state reporting requirements. These data also make up an integral part of a functioning pavement and asset management system used by agencies for short- and long-term roadway maintenance and rehabilitation planning. Collection of pertinent infrastructure inventory and condition data is often very costly and time-consuming because transportation agencies typically use various separate data collection systems.
Technological advancements over the last ten years have introduced capabilities to integrate various systems on the same platform to gain data collection efficiencies. For example, data collection platforms currently in use by most State transportation agencies include sensors that collect 3D pavement scans, longitudinal profiles, GPS, and right-of-way imagery all in one pass so that the same data collection vehicle can collect multiple data streams in one journey. More recent advancements are exploring the potential of using a fully-integrated data collection platform to collect imagery, roadway surface, structural, and sub-surface characteristics in one pass.
This presentation will introduce the capability of the fully-integrated systems currently being evaluated, and how State transportation agencies are utilizing the resulting comprehensive roadway evaluation data. The presentation will also explore the economic impact of using comprehensive roadway evaluation data when making pavement maintenance and rehabilitation decisions.
